While technically my first quilt, I didn't do all of it. Heather pieced the first 49 squares years ago, and handed off the rest to me to finish due to time constraints. A few years later, I finally decided it was time to get started.
The surprise wedding gift. Intended only to be a full-sized quilt, I learned they were saving up for a king-sized bed, so I went on a frantic fabric hunt. I managed to find all the fabrics, and increased the quilt to a king-sized quilt. The corners contain runes with meaning to Tracey embroidered in black thread on the black fabric, and the backing is Georgia Bulldogs fabric for Jim, a Georgia fan.
Now that she's seen it, I can explain: this quilt is for Lexie, a co-worker of mine. Our logo has books and stars in it, so I thought a star quilt would be perfect. The star fabrics were contributed by co-workers -- they are all fabrics with memories for the givers. For more about how this quilt came to be, see domesticat.net/2009/01/entrusted
Originally intended to be my first quilt of 2009, this project was delayed a few months by 'star stories' needing to take precedence. This is a green-blue-white bargello quilt, whose colorway was shamelessly stolen from screenshots of Lothlórien from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
(Have I mentioned how absolutely worth it those Marti Michell templates were?) Worked on as a side project while stumped on the quilt "Dragon's Fire." Expected to put it aside when I knew how to lay out "Dragon's Fire," but this quilt came together fast and was ready to go to the quilter's before I had my plan for Dragon's Fire ready to go.
Intended to be a lightning-fast baby quilt. I can't move forward on "Dragon's Fire" until my design software is back up and running, so I might as well knock out a quickie quilt in the meantime. Since it's small, and I've never done a small quilt before, I'm going to attempt to quilt it myself. EXPECT HILARITY.
My first 'commission.' Beth asked if I'd be willing to do an easy aquatic-themed quilt for her son Liam. She provided nine fabric options, of which I chose eight (seven front, one back).
I've been focusing a lot of my creative time into working with fabric this year, not writing. I finally decided to create something that's been wanting for some time here -- a custom content type here on domesticat.net for my quilts.
So far, this one's pretty simple. It's just a way for me to play around with a lot of the scraps I have on-hand. The idea is to use the Drunkard's Path templates that Jeff gave me for my birthday, and play with color. It's going to be a child's quilt, simple and bright. I'm turning the wedge pieces inward to create circles. Should be six columns wide; each column will be its own color scheme. I'll fade from dark-interior / light-exterior on one side to the opposite (light-interior / dark exterior) on the other.
