2008.1 (unnamed)

Date:
17 August 2008 - 6 October 2008
Recipient:
Mandy
Pattern:

While technically my first quilt, I didn't do all of it.  Heather pieced the first 49 squares years ago, and handed off the rest to me to finish due to time constraints.  A few years later, I finally decided it was time to get started.

Red Shift

Date:
11 November 2008 - 8 January 2009
Recipient:
4x4 and Spitty (aka Jim and Tracey)
Pattern:
Double Wedding Ring

The surprise wedding gift. Intended only to be a full-sized quilt, I learned they were saving up for a king-sized bed, so I went on a frantic fabric hunt. I managed to find all the fabrics, and increased the quilt to a king-sized quilt. The corners contain runes with meaning to Tracey embroidered in black thread on the black fabric, and the backing is Georgia Bulldogs fabric for Jim, a Georgia fan.

Star Stories

Date:
28 January 2009 - 18 April 2009
Recipient:
Lexie
Pattern:
Cosmosdust

Now that she's seen it, I can explain: this quilt is for Lexie, a co-worker of mine. Our logo has books and stars in it, so I thought a star quilt would be perfect. The star fabrics were contributed by co-workers -- they are all fabrics with memories for the givers. For more about how this quilt came to be, see domesticat.net/2009/01/entrusted

Lights over Lothlórien

Date:
4 April 2009 - 2 August 2009
Recipient:
Asai
Pattern:
Bargello
Blog entries referencing this quilt:

Originally intended to be my first quilt of 2009, this project was delayed a few months by 'star stories' needing to take precedence. This is a green-blue-white bargello quilt, whose colorway was shamelessly stolen from screenshots of Lothlórien from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Serendipity

Date:
8 August 2009 - 30 September 2009
Recipient:
Brian and Suzan
Pattern:
Double Wedding Ring

(Have I mentioned how absolutely worth it those Marti Michell templates were?)  Worked on as a side project while stumped on the quilt "Dragon's Fire."  Expected to put it aside when I knew how to lay out "Dragon's Fire," but this quilt came together fast and was ready to go to the quilter's before I had my plan for Dragon's Fire ready to go.

Speed Racer

Date:
3 October 2009 - 17 October 2009
Recipient:
Mandy
Pattern:
Disappearing Nine-Patch

Intended to be a lightning-fast baby quilt.  I can't move forward on "Dragon's Fire" until my design software is back up and running, so I might as well knock out a quickie quilt in the meantime.  Since it's small, and I've never done a small quilt before, I'm going to attempt to quilt it myself.  EXPECT HILARITY.

Dream of the Green Turtles

Date:
13 October 2009 - 17 October 2009
Recipient:
Beth's son Liam
Pattern:
Disappearing Nine-Patch

My first 'commission.' Beth asked if I'd be willing to do an easy aquatic-themed quilt for her son Liam. She provided nine fabric options, of which I chose eight (seven front, one back).

Dragon's Fire

Date:
28 September 2009
Recipient:
Jason & Crystal
Pattern:
Triple Irish Chain

A belated wedding present for Jason and Crystal.  Promised to them on their wedding day so, obviously, this quilt is not a surprise.

That isn't to say there aren't a couple of tricks up my sleeve. You guys should know me better than that by now.

Quilting section now available

I've been focusing a lot of my creative time into working with fabric this year, not writing. I finally decided to create something that's been wanting for some time here -- a custom content type here on domesticat.net for my quilts.

Pretty simple, really: it uses the flickrfield module of CCK to let me link easily to flickr sets and individual images.  I've set up http://domesticat.net/quilts as the landing page for all quilts.  For people just wanting to keep up with only new quilts, there's http://domesticat.net/quilts/rss as well.

I'll integrate those posts into my RSS feed in a moment or two.

Yay technology!

Today's Drupal story: Do as we say, not as we do

I think every Drupal admin's had this day at least once ... okay, twice ... fine!  Five or six times.  Name changed to protect today's lucky survivor:

Drunkard's Path
Blog entries referencing this quilt:

So far, this one's pretty simple. It's just a way for me to play around with a lot of the scraps I have on-hand.  The idea is to use the Drunkard's Path templates that Jeff gave me for my birthday, and play with color.  It's going to be a child's quilt, simple and bright.  I'm turning the wedge pieces inward to create circles.  Should be six columns wide; each column will be its own color scheme.  I'll fade from dark-interior / light-exterior on one side to the opposite (light-interior / dark exterior) on the other.

Colors are based on the scrap I had lying around:  pinky-purply, red, blue, green, brown, and black.

I have an idea of who it might be for, but it's early yet. We'll see.

Oh, the name? The circles and intense colors reminded me of the colored gels used in stage lighting.
