May 2011

A powerless time

After six nights in the dark, my power returned last night. I am immensely grateful that my house escaped the widespread devastation that can be found in my community. I've posted my photos of the devastation and its aftermath to Flickr; I did not seek out damage for photography purposes, but it was everywhere I went. it took a few days to rescue Tenzing from the vet's, thanks to this mess in front of their building:

Closet thoughts

I didn't totally feel like losing my lunch on the Day of Tornadoes™ until the meteorologist said in a panicked tone, "This is a large wedge tornado..." and paused to get a fix on where it would hit next. He rattled off the names of the middle school and the high school and said, "I think it's going to come right between them...if that's where you are, you need to be in your safe place RIGHT NOW."

Care to guess where my house was?

Sometimes, sweetness strikes you when you least expect it. As most of you undoubtedly know by now, I held a quilt contest; the person who had the closest guess to Jeff's raw hospital bill at UAB won a quilt. Susanna, a co-worker of mine, won it by guessing $550,000, getting her just a little over $7K away from the true number.

I fully expected to be constructing a new quilt for her, but she asked if she could have an antique, instead. She said that she'd never gotten a quilt when she married, and that her tenth anniversary was coming up this summer, so why not make it a real antique? She loved Depression-era quilts, and quickly settled on a Depression-era double wedding ring quilt, preferably with feedsack fabrics.

It was this, or opposable thumbs

Since I tend to speak for the cats a lot, I thought I'd make it official.

(also, I'm helping the creator of the Twitter Blackbird module for Drupal test a D6 version.)

This jam you might want to get into.

It's fruit season here in Huntsvegas. I'm trying to decide what jams, fruit butters, jellies, etc. to make this year. I owe a lot of people a lot of favors, and homey treats never hurt. I know what I like, but I don't know what everyone else likes. Do, please, render your opinions so I'll have an idea of what to get when I next wander through the farmers' market.

You can mark as many as you like. I don't know how much I'll have time to do, but I certainly don't know what you'd take if I don't ask!

Cats, quilts, etc.

A few quick updates...

Bessie Jane arrived today. In an odd twist of fate, given the [likely] maker's maiden name -- Spurlock -- she was probably a distant relative of Jacob's. Yeah, Jacob, my quilty co-conspirator. Now, admittedly, when I bid on this quilt top on ebay, I felt confident in its quality, but I can tell you that when I opened the box today, I was delighted at its condition and quality.

Things that make me happy

(Note that this entry is for the spring 2011 Quilt Bloggers' festival. Those of you who read domesticat.net regularly have seen this quilt and these photos before.)

In case of rapture, plz feed cat.

As we all know, things on the internet can be changed after the fact, so let's archive a few things relevant to the upcoming weekend:

What do you say to those who insist we cannot know the precise date of Judgment Day?
